Movie Review - V/H/S

Movie Review - V/H/S

By Rych McCain International/nationally Syndicated Entertainment Columnist

Photos Magnet Releasing

V/H/S. Magnet Releasing & The Collective in association with Bloody Disgusting. Starring various segment actors. Directed by Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glenn McQuaid, Joe Swanberg and Radio Silence.

A group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house, the guys are confronted with a dead body, a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage, each video stranger and more inexplicable than the last.

This film is a montage of horror (horrible) shorts with Gawd awful messey music. It is suppose to be scary but it totally misses the point with too many foolish distractions.

Red Lights. Millennium Entertainment. Starring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Olsen, Joely Richardson and Toby Jones. Written, Directed and Produced by Rodrigo Cortes. Produced by Adrian Guerra.

Dr. Matheson (Weaver) Buckley (Murphy)
Dr. Margaret Matheson (Weaver) and her partner Tom Buckley (Murphy) are the world’s foremost investigators of paranormal phenomena. As professional skeptics, they have debunked dozens of fraudulent mind readers, ghost hunters, faith healers and the like by detecting what Matheson calls “red lights,” subtle clues to the trickery behind each of these “Supernatural” occurrences.

Psychic Simon Silver (De Niro)
But when the legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (De Niro) comes out of retirement after 30 years, his once-fearless adversary Matheson warns Buckley to back off. Suspecting that the charismatic, spoon-bending mind reader was involved in the mysterious death of his most vociferous critic three decades earlier, she considers him far too dangerous to confront.

But in going for a big rep, Buckley is determined to discredit Silver. This one is a super natural thriller that may even have you question some of your own beliefs

Movie Review - Bernie

Movie Review - Bernie

By Rych McCain International/Nationally Syndicated Entertainment Columnist

Photos Millennium Entertainment

Bernie. Millennium Entertainment, Mandalay Vision and Wind Dancer Films. Starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. Directed by Richard Linklater. Written by Richard Linklater & Skip Hollandsworth. Produced by Richard Linklater & Ginger Sledge.

Bernie Tiede (Jack Black)

Back in the late 90’s in the tiny town of Cathage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents. Tiede did it all from teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and helping anyone in need.

All of the locals loved Bernie so it was no surprise that after he handled the funeral of wealthy Carthage oilman and chairman of Carthage’s bank Rod Nugent that he soon struck up a friendship with Nugent’s widow Marjorie who was the most hated woman in town.

Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine)

Marjorie lavish Bernie with gifts and took him on world trips. He soon was her one man valet, handling all of her affairs. Marjorie gradually left Bernie with no life of his own and her demands only increased as he struggled to keep up.

DA Danny Buck Davidson (Matt McConaughey)
Then Marjorie came up missing for nine months and no one cared or missed her but the town’s DA Danny Buck Davidson. She was found stuffed in rectangular floor freezer in her garage where she had been shot four times in the back. Bernie was arrested, convicted and sent to prison for life. The film tells the story in narrative form from the viewpoint of the actual people in Carthage. This is an interesting movie.
