Big
Miracle. Universal Pictures, Working Title Pictures. Starring Drew
Barrymore, John Krasinshi, Ted Dansen, Dermot Mulroney, Kristen
Bell, Tim Blake Nelson and Vinessa Shaw. Directed by Ken
Kwapis. Produced by Steve Golin.
In October of 1988 a
news story broke worldwide with daily major network coverage about a family of
three endangered, majestic gray whales (a mom, pop and their off spring) who
were trapped by rapidly forming ice in the arctic waters of Pt. Barrow, Alaska.
In the movie version, reporter Adam Carlson (Krasinshi) discovers the whales and
breaks the story. Then his Green Peace ex-girl friend Rachel (Barrymore) helps
to organize and lead an all out push to save the whales which eventually forced
the combined rescue efforts of the U.S. and Russian military This is a great
nature story. Too bad the same people who go all out for animals can’t treat
their fellow human beings with equal concern and accord.
